Clio: AI you never have to talk to

Clio is an interesting one. After tinkering with Home Assistant, trying to make it work as an everything-dashboard, I realized it couldn't be all that I wanted it to be. At the same time I was dabbling in agentic AI systems and noticed that nearly every AI tool and service starts with a text input. I think that's a huge hurdle for mass-market adoption in the long term. Not everyone wants the latest AI model shoved in their face, and most people don't want to talk to a fake person all day just to get things done.

A dashboard that adapts to your life

That's where Clio comes in. I wanted a dashboard that adapted to my life and whatever I had going on day to day. What better purpose for AI. The catch is you never talk directly to it. It quietly tracks what's going on through your calendar, your phone's location services, the weather in your area, the news, and any other information you choose to expose through integrations and extensions.

Quietly useful

The AI works in the background: it can tell your partner you're on your way home from work, or drop a new card on your dashboard suggesting you stop for groceries because your partner added milk to the list. It watches your calendar and nudges you if you're running late to your next appointment. All of it quietly, and all of it secure. Every bit of user data on the server is encrypted, so not even I can look.

Why it matters

I haven't touched this project in a while, but it's an interesting look at how radically different the user experience of AI tools could be if we change how we think about their use case. The best assistant might be the one you never have to talk to.
